Destination market

Importing from Indonesia to Egypt.

Egypt requires foreign food establishments to be registered before their products may enter, which is the first thing to establish about any Indonesian supplier. The market is large in its own right and it also functions as a route onward into Africa.

Tariff treatment.

Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. It applies the same way in every member state, so it is written out once: what changes on 1 January 2027 →

Who you deal with on arrival.

Establishment registration first
Food import control runs through the national food safety authority, and registration of the foreign producing establishment is the precondition rather than a formality.1
Arabic labelling
Requirements are set nationally and applied at inspection. Artwork has to be right before production rather than corrected at the port.1
Halal is expected on food
Certification is commercially decisive across most food categories, and the accepted certifying bodies are specified.
A gateway as well as a market
Alexandria and the Suez ports feed both domestic consumption and re-export into Africa and the wider region, which shapes demand towards bulk.

Where it lands.

  • Alexandria

The historic main entry and the closest port to the largest concentration of buyers.

  • Damietta

A major container terminal on the Mediterranean coast, used heavily for transhipment.

  • Port Said

At the northern end of the canal, and a significant transhipment point in its own right.

By category.

  • Coffee, cocoa and spices

A large and long-established spice and coffee trade, buying bulk material for domestic use and for re-export across the region.

  • Furniture, wood and rattan

Growing demand in hospitality and residential fit-out, with product requirements rather than food control.

  • Seafood

Its own Mediterranean and Red Sea fisheries alongside imports, with health certification required on entry.

  • Essential oils and personal care

A deep tradition in fragrance materials and a manufacturing base buying natural raw materials.

Questions buyers ask.

What stops most first shipments to Egypt?

Registration of the producing establishment. If the Indonesian factory is not registered, the goods cannot enter however good they are and however complete the rest of the paperwork is. Establish this before you discuss price.

Is Egypt a good route into Africa?

For some categories, yes. The ports handle substantial transhipment and there is an established re-export trade. Whether it beats shipping direct depends entirely on the destination market and the volumes involved.

How important is halal certification?

For food, commercially decisive, and the accepted certifying bodies are specified rather than open. Confirm with your buyer which certifier they need before arranging anything.
