Importing from Indonesia to Czechia.

Czechia has no coastline, so every sea shipment lands somewhere else and moves inland by rail or road. That single fact shapes the cost and the schedule more than anything national. Food control sits with the Czech agriculture and food inspection authority.

Tariff treatment.

Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. It applies the same way in every member state, so it is written out once: what changes on 1 January 2027 →

Who you deal with on arrival.

The port belongs to another country
Hamburg, Rotterdam or Gdańsk, then an inland leg by rail or truck. Where the goods clear customs is a decision with real cost consequences.
Czech food inspection
The national inspection authority controls food on the market and at import, separately from the border control at the coastal member state.1
A manufacturing economy
Demand runs to inputs for domestic industry as much as to finished consumer goods, which shapes quantities and specifications.
Czech labelling for retail
Required for goods sold locally, and it is a national requirement rather than something the entry port handles.

Where it lands.

  • Hamburg

The traditional gateway for Czech cargo, with established rail connections inland.

  • Gdańsk

Increasingly used, with a shorter land leg for the eastern half of the country.

  • Rotterdam

An alternative with strong inland barge and rail links, often competitive on total cost.

By category.

  • Coffee, cocoa and spices

A growing speciality coffee culture and a food processing sector buying bulk input. EUDR applies from December 2026.

  • Furniture, wood and rattan

A furniture manufacturing tradition of its own, so demand runs to materials, components and pieces it does not make.

  • Seafood

Landlocked and entirely dependent on imports, mostly frozen and mostly through the coastal hubs.

  • Essential oils and personal care

A real cosmetics and chemical manufacturing base buying raw materials, with EU obligations on the importer.

Questions buyers ask.

Where should the goods clear customs?

It is a genuine choice and it affects cost. Clearing at the coastal port or moving under transit to an inland terminal both work, and they differ on cash flow, VAT handling and how quickly problems surface. Decide it with your broker before booking.

Which port is cheapest?

It depends on where in Czechia the goods are going and on the rail service at the time. Hamburg is traditional, Gdańsk suits the east, and Rotterdam competes through barge and rail. Comparing total landed cost rather than ocean rate is the only version of this question that helps.

Does landlocked mean slower?

It means an extra leg with its own schedule, and inland rail from the northern ports is well developed. What it changes most is that a delay at the port is now a delay before a second journey rather than before delivery.
