Destination market
Importing from Indonesia to Brazil.
Brazil produces most agricultural commodities itself, so Indonesian demand is narrow and specific. Food and cosmetics fall under the health surveillance agency, plant and animal health under the agriculture ministry, and labelling is in Portuguese.
Tariff treatment.
Indonesian goods currently enter the European Union under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences, with origin self-declared by a registered exporter. Indonesia leaves that scheme on 1 January 2027 and the agreement meant to replace it is not in force yet. It applies the same way in every member state, so it is written out once: what changes on 1 January 2027 →
Who you deal with on arrival.
- ANVISA for food and cosmetics
- The national health surveillance agency controls imported food, beverages and cosmetics, with registration and import authorisation held on the Brazilian side.1
- The agriculture ministry for plant health
- Plant and animal products face separate phytosanitary control by the agriculture ministry, which is a different process and a different set of documents.2
- Portuguese labelling, not Spanish
- Brazilian requirements are in Portuguese and they differ from the Spanish-language markets around it. Artwork prepared for Mexico does not carry over.1
- It grows the competition
- Brazil is a leading producer of coffee, sugar and soya, so Indonesian material sells into gaps rather than into general demand.
Where it lands.
Santos
The dominant container port, serving São Paulo and the industrial south-east.
Paranaguá
The southern alternative, strong on agricultural and bulk cargo.
Itajaí and Navegantes
Southern container entry used by importers in Santa Catarina and beyond.
By category.
Coffee, cocoa and spices
Brazil is a leading coffee and cocoa producer, so demand is for pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove that it does not grow at scale.
Furniture, wood and rattan
A large domestic timber and furniture industry, so demand runs to rattan, natural fibre and designs it does not produce.
Seafood
A long coast and its own fishery, with health surveillance applied to imports and a narrow set of gaps to fill.
Essential oils and personal care
One of the world's largest cosmetics markets, buying natural raw materials in real quantity.
Questions buyers ask.
What does Brazil buy from Indonesia?
Spices it does not grow, particularly pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, plus coconut products, natural fibre and cosmetic raw materials. Coffee and cocoa are the categories where Brazil competes rather than buys.
Can I use my Spanish labelling?
No. Brazil is Portuguese-speaking and its labelling requirements are its own. Preparing one set of artwork for Latin America is a mistake that gets discovered at the border.
Which authority do I deal with?
Both, and for different parts of the same consignment. The health surveillance agency handles food and cosmetic aspects, the agriculture ministry handles plant health. A supplier who has cleared into Brazil before will know which document goes where.
