Indonesian aquaculture.
Indonesian aquaculture spans traditional coastal ponds, intensive shrimp farms, marine cages and seaweed lines. They are different industries with different risks, and knowing which one your product comes from tells you what to ask about.
The systems.
Four broad kinds, and the differences matter more than the species.
- Traditional brackish ponds
- Tambak, tidal-fed and low density, producing milkfish and shrimp. Lower input, lower yield, and a different disease and residue profile.
- Intensive shrimp ponds
- Lined ponds with aeration and managed feed, mostly vannamei. Higher yield, higher input, and the residue question is more prominent.
- Marine cages
- Grouper, barramundi and others grown in floating cages. Water quality is shared with everyone nearby, which is a genuine consideration.
- Seaweed lines
- Eucheuma and Gracilaria on lines and in ponds. Very low input, enormous smallholder involvement, and the drying step is where quality is decided.
What to ask about, by system.
For intensive shrimp: feed, water management, disease history and what has been used to treat it. Antibiotic residues are what regulated markets test for.
For traditional ponds: the water source and what is upstream, since tidal ponds take what the coast gives them.
For cages: the site, the density and what else is farmed nearby.
For seaweed: the drying, because that is where sand, salt and moisture enter the product.
Certification and what it covers.
Aquaculture certification schemes exist and export-oriented farms are more likely to hold them than smallholder operations.
Read the scope: which farm, which species, which cycle. A processor certified for one supply base does not certify the rest.
Group certification is how smallholder seaweed and pond production reaches certification at all, and the internal control system is what makes it work or not.
Where the buyer's risk sits.
Residues, tested on arrival in regulated markets, and a failure is a rejection rather than a discount.
Cold chain from harvest, which is decided at the pond and the processor rather than at the port.
Traceability back to the pond, which is possible with an organised processor and genuinely hard with an open-market purchase.
Disease events, which can remove supply from a region with very little warning.
Questions buyers ask.
Is traditional pond production lower quality?
It is lower input and lower density, which changes the profile rather than the quality. Handling after harvest decides quality in both systems, and a well-run traditional pond can beat a badly run intensive one.
Should I insist on certification?
It depends on what your customers require. Certification narrows the supplier pool considerably in some categories, and where it is a real requirement it is worth the narrowing.
What is the biggest risk?
Antibiotic residues on intensive shrimp, tested on arrival in regulated markets. It is a rejection rather than a downgrade, which is why lot testing before shipment is standard practice for serious buyers.
