Comparison

A sourcing agent or a B2B platform.

A B2B platform is a directory with messaging attached. It is very good at producing candidates and it cannot stand in a building, judge a sample against production, or tell you that a company is licensed as a trader. An agent does those and costs money. The crossover is about order value and about how much a mistake would cost.

Side by side.

CriterionB2B platformA marketplace listing suppliers, with search, messaging and sometimes escrow.Sourcing agentA person or firm in the country, paid to represent the buyer.
Finding candidatesExcellent and immediate. Hundreds of companies in an afternoon, at no cost.Slower and narrower, and the names often come from clusters that do not list themselves anywhere.
Telling a producer from a trader1Poor. A listing is an advertisement, and paid placement buys prominence rather than verification. The core of the job, and it is done against the licensing register and by visiting.
Inspecting goodsNot offered, or offered through a third party you engage separately.Included in the work, and it happens before the container is sealed, which is the only cheap moment.
Documents for your marketThe supplier's problem, which means it is quietly your problem.Mapped against your destination before anyone quotes a price.
CostFree to search. The cost is inside the price you are quoted and you cannot see it.A stated fee. Ours is published, and where an agent takes commission from the factory instead, the cost is invisible again.
Conflict of interestThe platform earns from listings and advertising, so prominence is a product they sell to suppliers.Depends entirely on who pays. An agent paid by the factory has the platform's problem with a friendlier face.
Where it failsSmall orders go fine. The failure mode is a first container from a company nobody ever visited.Expensive for small orders, and useless if you pick one who does not go to the factory.

Which to choose.

You are testing a product with a small trial order
A platform. The cost of a mistake is low and the speed is worth a lot.
You are committing a container of money to a company you have never met
Somebody on the ground, whether that is an agent, an inspection firm or your own trip.
The product is regulated in your market
An agent or a specialist. Platforms do not do compliance and suppliers routinely answer the wrong question.
You already have a supplier you trust
Neither, in full. Buy inspection alone, which is a separate job and much cheaper.

Questions buyers ask.

Are platform verified badges worth anything?

They are worth exactly what they audit, which is usually documents and a registration rather than premises and production. That is not nothing and it is not what most buyers think they are reading. Treat a badge as a first filter and do your own check on the register regardless.

Can I use both?

That is what most experienced buyers do. Find candidates on a platform where it is free and fast, then pay somebody local to check the shortlist and inspect the goods. The two are complementary, and the mistake is using the free half for the job the paid half exists to do.

At what order size does an agent pay for itself?

When the cost of getting it wrong exceeds the fee, which is a question about your own business rather than about a threshold. A container of the wrong specification is usually five figures. Our own floor sits where coordination costs us more than the fee earns, and it is published.

How do I judge an agent?

Ask who pays them. An agent taking commission from the factory has the same conflict a platform has, with the added problem that you think they are on your side. Then ask what they physically do, and whether anyone goes to the building.

Still deciding?

Tell us the application and the market. We will say which one your specification actually needs, and quote both if it is genuinely close.

One line is enough to start. The more exact you are, the faster the answer comes back.
